Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful and transformative times in your life —
and a maternity shoot is a powerful way to capture that moment before it slips away. Whether you’re going for dreamy outdoor shots, soft studio portraits, or an intimate lifestyle session at home, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure you feel confident, comfortable, and radiant.
Here’s your complete guide to preparing for your maternity shoot:
1. Time It Right
The sweet spot for a maternity shoot is usually between 28 and 34 weeks.
By this time, your bump is beautifully round, but you’re not too close to your due date, so you’re more likely to feel comfortable and mobile during the session. Every pregnancy is different though — listen to your body and book accordingly.
2. Choose the Right Photographer
You've come to the right place! With 8 years of experience I am a photographer that:
- Specializes in maternity photography
- Knows how to pose different body types
- Offers guidance on wardrobe, posing, and locations
- Understands lighting that flatters your pregnant form
Tip: Book early — months fill in advance!
3. What to Bring
Your outfit plays a huge role in how your photos will look — and how you’ll feel in them. We have a client closet for our STUDIO maternity session clients with many different styles to choose from!
What to wear:
- Nude seamless Panties

- Nude colored strapless bra or pasties
- I recommend cakes >> click here
Tips for coordinating with a partner or family:
- Choose solid colors or soft patterns — avoid logos or prints
- Neutrals, pastels, and earth tones photograph beautifully
- Bring more than one outfit if your package allows it
- Bring snacks or toys for little ones
4. Pamper Yourself
You deserve to feel your best. A little self-care before your shoot goes a long way.
- Treat yourself to professional hair and makeup for the BEST results
- Use self-tanner if your belly is a different color than the rest of your body
- Hydrate and rest the night before — it shows!
- Moisturize your skin for a healthy glow (especially your belly)
5. Props or Personal Touches
While not necessary, small props you can bring to add meaning to your shoot:
- Ultrasound photo
- Share any inspiration photos before your shoot
6. Relax and Trust the Process
You don’t need to know how to pose — I will guide you. The most beautiful photos come when you’re relaxed and connected.
Remember:
- You don’t have to look perfect. You already are.
- Embrace the beauty of your changing body.
- Breathe deeply, move naturally, and enjoy the moment.
